Enhanced RapidFire™ System Advances R&D with Walk-Away Automation
Development Funded Confidentially by Top-10 Pharmaceutical Company
Woburn, MA, October 2, 2007 - BioTrove, Inc. today announced launch of its second-generation RapidFire Mass Spectrometry system. Capable of fully-automated, unattended operation for up to eight hours, during which a total of ten 384-well microtiter plates can be analyzed, the enhanced system was developed in collaboration with a major U.S. pharmaceutical company that confidentially funded the project in order to receive accelerated delivery of the first instrument.
"Research is a 24-7 effort. Our customers expressed urgent need for walk-away automation and the ability to run the system for extended periods without staff support, in order to improve research speed and efficiency," said Can Özbal, Ph.D., General Manager of RapidFire Products. "The new RapidFire system makes that possible, thanks to close collaboration with our customers - something we've embraced since installing the first RapidFire Mass Spectrometry system three years ago. This next-generation instrument results from our tireless commitment to supporting customers' work," he added.
Unlike other high-throughput mass spectrometry systems, the newly-released RapidFire system is fully automated to facilitate walk-away analysis. The next-generation instrument also incorporates new hardware and software features to streamline non-primary screening applications - including kinetic experiments, supporting structure-activity relationship studies through the determination of IC50 values and mechanism of inhibition studies, along with in vitro ADME experiments - in which data quality is of the utmost importance. A number of improvements to minimize sample-to-sample carryover and to maximize sensitivity and accuracy have also been incorporated into the new RapidFire system.
"Eight of the top 12 U.S. pharmaceutical companies now use RapidFire to advance drug discovery, lead optimization and pipeline development efforts, and our dialogue with these industry leaders enables us to hear first-hand which features and applications are important to big pharma," said Al Luderer, Ph.D., president and CEO of BioTrove. "The next-generation RapidFire system shows the power of collaboration with outcomes-oriented preclinical laboratories, and resulted in the instrument they desired."

About BioTrove, Inc.
BioTrove, Inc. offers two innovative technology platforms: RapidFire™, which enables the acceleration of drug discovery and pipeline decisions, and OpenArray™, which advances genomic research in a wide range of life science fields, including agriculture, disease research, bio-defense, and public health. With more than half of the world's ten largest pharmaceutical companies as clients, and partnerships with prestigious research and public health centers around the world, BioTrove's products and services ensure that an industry committed to accuracy and speed can meet business goals.
RapidFire™ Mass Spectrometry (RFMS) uses an innovative microfluidic technology to facilitate analysis at faster than 10 seconds per sample, eliminating the bottleneck created by traditional mass spectrometry throughput. RFMS is routinely used in many applications including the high-throughput screening of previously intractable drug targets, cytochrome P450 inhibition and other ADME assays and directed evolution studies.
The OpenArray™ Platform enables genomics researchers to generate SNP and real time qPCR data in the hundreds of thousands of data points per day, significantly increasing the number of samples analyzed while significantly decreasing the time and cost required. The flexible format and nanoliter scale of the OpenArray™ system allows for easy adjustment of sample and assay numbers, achieving economical, high-throughput genomics.
