High-Throughput BioTrove System Provides Sensitivity, Flexibility Necessary for Rapid Pathogen Detection in Mouse Colonies
Woburn, MA, August 28, 2007 - BioTrove, Inc. today announced that Charles River Laboratories will use the BioTrove OpenArray™ system to detect rodent-specific pathogens, as part of their effort to evaluate the health of rodent species. This is the second OpenArray instrument purchased by Charles River since 2006, when the organization adopted the OpenArray SNP Genotyping System for use in its genetic quality control process.
"We are committed to providing clients with exceptional lab animal support services to assist in diagnosing specific infectious pathogens," said Kenneth Henderson, Ph.D., Director of Molecular Diagnostics and R&D, Charles River Laboratories. "Our new OpenArray system will now enable us to screen samples with custom-designed pathogen panels that utilize our pre-existing fluorogenic PCR technology, which has been widely reported to be more specific and sensitive than conventional gel-based PCR. Our development studies demonstrated OpenArray provides comparable sensitivity to our microtiter format while requiring just a fraction of the original PCR volume and reagents."
Charles River Laboratories is designing pathogen panels using OpenArray plates, each of which can contain between 16 and 3072 easily-changed assays and can be loaded with up to 144 samples. The Open Array system's high-throughput, large-scale PCR screening capabilities permits the rapid detection of infectious agents, while its flexibility in assay panel modification accommodates the addition or modification of assays to include newly-identified strains or species.
"For researchers across diagnostic and life sciences sectors, we see an increasing need for flexibility and sensitivity in high-throughput detection systems," said Al Luderer, Ph.D., president and CEO, BioTrove. "The OpenArray system directly addresses those needs, and we are extremely pleased to be working with a market leader like Charles River to explore pathogen detection in rodents, while improving their ability to serve clients and enable drug discovery research."
About BioTrove, Inc.
BioTrove, Inc. offers two innovative technology platforms: RapidFire™, which enables the acceleration of drug discovery and pipeline decisions, and OpenArray™, which advances genomic research in a wide range of life science fields, including agriculture, disease research, bio-defense, and public health. With more than half of the world's ten largest pharmaceutical companies as clients, and partnerships with prestigious research and public health centers around the world, BioTrove's products and services ensure that an industry committed to accuracy and speed can meet business goals.
RapidFire™ Mass Spectrometry (RFMS) uses an innovative microfluidic technology to facilitate analysis at faster than 10 seconds per sample, eliminating the bottleneck created by traditional mass spectrometry throughput. RFMS is routinely used in many applications including the high-throughput screening of previously intractable drug targets, cytochrome P450 inhibition and other ADME assays and directed evolution studies.
The OpenArray™ Platform enables genomics researchers to generate SNP and real time qPCR data in the hundreds of thousands of data points per day, significantly increasing the number of samples analyzed while significantly decreasing the time and cost required. The flexible format and nanoliter scale of the OpenArray™ system allows for easy adjustment of sample and assay numbers, achieving economical, high-throughput genomics.
