BioTrove, Inc. Appoints Michael Olex as Vice President of Manufacturing

Woburn, MA, May 6, 2004—BioTrove, Inc., a biotechnology company developing and commercializing nano-fluidic systems for the life sciences, today announced the appointment of Michael Olex as Vice President, Manufacturing. Mr. Olex brings to BioTrove over 25 years of experience in manufacturing and engineering in life science systems and analytical instrumentation. Most recently, he served as Senior Vice President, Manufacturing and Operations at U.S. Genomics.

“Michael’s manufacturing and operational expertise coupled with his background in commercializing scientific instrumentation is a great complement to our senior management team,” explained Robert H. Ellis, President and Chief Executive Officer of BioTrove. “We have made significant strides in our two technology platforms and secured financing,” Ellis added. “Hiring Michael was a strategic move that we have been looking to make, especially as in the near-term, he will oversee the building of our manufacturing facility and scale up of our platforms and applications.”

The recent senior level appointments of Patrick Carroll as Chief Business Officer, Alan Carter as Vice President of Worldwide Sales and today’s announcement naming Michael Olex as Vice President of Manufacturing brings a well rounded expertise to BioTrove that will continue to drive the Company in its commercialization efforts and development of its nano-fluidics technology platforms.

Prior to joining BioTrove, Mr. Olex served as Senior Vice President at U.S. Genomics where he was responsible for manufacturing and operations, including the expansion of its new facility. Previously, he held senior executive positions at PerSeptive Biosystems, a provider of life science and analytical instruments, which was later acquired by Applied Biosystems. At PerSeptive he supervised the production of instrument systems and directed new product development. Prior to PerSeptive Biosystems, Mr. Olex led programs to develop instrumentation for clinical laboratories within the chemistry systems division at Ciba-Corning Diagnostics.

He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Detroit and Cleveland State University, respectively. He also earned a M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

About the Living Chip™
The Living Chip™ is a broadly applicable nano-liter fluidics technology platform for massively parallel and low-volume analysis of genetic, genomic, proteomic, biochemical and cellular samples. The platform uniquely combines the parallelism of microarrays with the data quality and sensitivity of PCR to perform genetic and genomic assays, including genotyping and RNA expression analysis.

About Momentum™ Assay Development and Screening
Momentum Assay Development and Screening is a patent-protected, ultra high-throughput mass spectrometry service that enables microliter-scale functional assay development and screening of challenging targets with promising biology that are generally not pursued. In the interest of accelerating discovery, companies often choose to forego many highly promising targets, because of the complexity in developing screening assays around such targets. Momentum dissolves this bottleneck, transforming the drug discovery process by providing assay development and screening for these targets.

About BioTrove, Inc.
BioTrove, Inc. is a biotechnology company focused on advancing life science and drug discovery research by leveraging revolutionary micro- and nano-scale technologies. BioTrove has two core platforms: the Living Chip™, a broadly applicable nano-liter fluidics technology platform for massively parallel and low-volume analysis of genetic, genomic, proteomic, biochemical and cellular samples and Momentum™ Assay Development and Screening, an assay development and high throughput screening service that unlocks the value of intractable drug targets.
