Colin Brenan, Ph.D., Becomes Chief Technology Officer
Woburn, MA, October 20, 2003BioTrove, Inc. today announced that its Chief Operating Officer, Robert H. Ellis,
has been named President and Chief Executive Officer to guide the commercialization
of the company's micro- and nano-scale products in molecular biology and
solutions for critical bottlenecks in drug discovery. BioTrove's founding
CEO, Dr. Colin Brenan becomes Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice
President, Research and Engineering Development.
According to Enrico Petrillo, M.D., General Partner at CB Health Ventures,
LLC and a member of BioTrove's Board of Directors, "BioTrove has
made great progress in developing its two core technologies - Living Chip
and Momentum. As BioTrove transitions from an R&D focus to commercializing
its core technologies, Bob is an ideal person to lead the process."
BioTrove recently launched Momentum, a patented ultra high throughput
mass spectrometry technique that enables microliter-scale functional assay
development and screening of intractable targets for which current technology
is not an option. As companies select targets for screening, they are
often forced to forgo highly promising targets because of the challenge
in developing screening assays. Momentum has the potential to remove that
barrier. BioTrove's other technology platform, the Living Chip successfully
addresses SNP and transcription analysis by massively parallel low volume
analysis of genetic, genomic, biochemical and cellular samples with parallel
liquid transfer, combining the best attributes of real time PCR (data
quality) and micro arrays (parallelism) on one platform with higher throughput,
lower cost, better quantification and high sensitivity.
Mr. Ellis has more than 29 years of experience in analytical and biotechnology
instrumentation, including 17 years of experience in the field of genetic
and protein analysis. Before joining BioTrove as COO in May 2003, Ellis
was at Affymetrix, where he was Executive Vice President responsible for
R&D efforts for the commercialization of the company's microarray
technology resulting in the development and introduction of numerous new
products.
Prior to Affymetrix, Ellis was President of Genometrix and held senior
executive positions at Applied Biosystems and Perkin Elmer where he was
President of Applied Biosystems Japan, responsible for strategic marketing
and R&D for Perkin Elmer's Applied Genetics and Nucleic Acid synthesis
units. While at Applied Biosystems, he led the marketing of the world's
first automated DNA sequencer that has generated over $1 billion dollars
in sales since its introduction. Prior to Applied Biosystems, Mr. Ellis
held a number of management positions with the Scientific Instrument Division
of Hewlett Packard. He holds a B. A. from Hartwick College with a Major
in Chemistry.
About BioTrove
BioTrove, Inc. is a privately held, biotechnology company focused on
leveraging revolutionary micro- and nano-scale engineering solutions to
overcome current bottlenecks in pharmaceutical drug discovery and biotechnology.
BioTrove has developed two innovative nanofluidic technologies - the Living
Chip and Momentum - that enable the rapid processing of molecular
information encoded in nanoliter reaction volumes. BioTrove offers integrated
library storage and screening services based on the core technology as
well as advanced instrumentation to partners.
