Recent advances in genetics, proteomics, and molecular biology have yielded large numbers of targets that must be screened to determine the most promising drug leads. One challenge facing pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies is to develop strategies to identify which compounds, in a library of hundreds of thousands of compounds to millions, are potential lead candidates.

For over three years, BioTrove and its partners have used RapidFire™ Lead Discovery service to screen over 5 million compounds and detect promising new targets. BioTrove scientists quantify substrates and products using a high throughput mass spectrometry technique. Mass spectrometry is a solution phase native detection technique that precludes the need for optically labeled or radioactive substrates.
The ideal candidate assays for RapidFire™ Lead Discovery are often the same ones that are difficult to screen using traditional HTS techniques. These include enzymatic targets that have substrates that are lipidic or very small, yet are important in a wide variety of diseases.
